The Mississippi State Capitol has been home to the Mississippi legislative and executive branch since 1903. The Carroll Gartin Justice Building currently houses the judicial branch right across the street. The classic Beaux Arts architecture of the Mississippi State Capitol building was actually a copycat to the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

In 1979 the Mississippi State Capitol was renovated for $19 million dollars. (The building initially cost a little over $1 million dollars in the early 20th century.) Before the current Mississippi State Capitol building, Mississippi actually had 2 previous capitol buildings. Visitors are welcome to tour the Mississippi State Capitol building Monday-Friday. Contact the Jackson Mississippi Convention and Visitors Bureau at 1-800-354-7695 for additional tour information.
